1971: Tom Reid scored a penalty shot goal (The first successful penalty shot goal in Stars History) in the third period to lead the North Stars to a 1-1 tie against the Canadiens at the Met Center.
1973: The Saint Paul Vulcans open their inaugural season in the Midwest Junior Hockey League.
1976: Former NHL defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist born in Umea, Sweden. Tjarnqvist played in the NHL 2001-02 through 2008-09 with Atlanta, the Minnesota Wild, Edmonton and Colorado.
1979: Minnesota’s rookie defenseman Craig Hartsburg scored the first goal of his NHL career, in a 5-4 North Stars’ win in Buffalo.
1982: Dino Ciccarelli and Mike Eaves each scored twice to lead the North Stars to a 6-2 win over Toronto in Minnesota.
1984: NHL defenseman Matt Smaby born in Minneapolis, MN. Smaby has played in the NHL since 2007-08.
1984: Detroit’s Reed Larson picked up an assist in a 6-4 loss at Buffalo to give him 451 career points, the most by any defenseman in Red Wings history. He broke the record set by Red Kelly.
1987: Dino Ciccarelli scored a goal and an assist to move past Bill Goldsworthy as the All Time point scoring leader of the Minnesota North Stars. Ciccarelli’s points came in a 4-3 win over Toronto, and gave him 608 points, two more than Goldsworthy.
1989: Brian Bellows scored twice as the North Stars won 3-2 over the Quebec Nordiques, in Minnesota.
1992: Rookie Teemu Selanne scored his first career hat trick, and added an assist to lead the Jets to a 7-3 win over Edmonton in Winnipeg. Phil Housley had three assists to reach the 500 assist mark in his career.
1999: Atlanta Thrashers became the second modern NHL franchise to get a shutout for the first victory in team history, when goaltender Damian Rhodes led the team to a 2-0 win over the Islanders at Long Island. It was Rhodes 12th and final career shutout.
2006: Manny Fernandez got his 12th career shutout, and Brian Rolston scored twice and added an assist to lead the Wild to a 5-0 win over the visiting Blue Jackets. The win gave the Wild a 5-0-0 start to the season, and 100 home wins in their history.
2007: Rookie goalie Josh Harding made a career-high 37 saves to record his third career shutout as the Wild won 2-0 over the Ducks at Anaheim. Minnesota’s 5-0 start left the Wild as the NHL’s only team without a loss.
2008: Antti Miettinen had two goals and an assist in a 4-2 win at Atlanta to become the first player in Minnesota franchise history (eight years) to score goals in each of his first two games with the team.
2010: Minnesota scored 4 power play goals to beat the Oilers for the 14th straight time on home ice, and Niklas Backstrom improved to 12-0-0 lifetime at home against Edmonton, with a 4-2 victory for the Wild. Mikko Koivu led the way with 2 goals and an assist.
