This Day in MN Hockey History: Nov. 20

1973: Parker MacDonald took over as the Minnesota North Stars coach, replacing Jack Gordon.

1982: Neal Broten scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 5-1 win over the visiting New Jersey Devils.

1987: New York Rangers traded defenseman Curt Giles to the Minnesota North Stars for future considerations and minor leaguer Byron Lomow.

1997: After the NHL announced that Minnesota had been awarded an expansion franchise, to begin play in the 2000–01 season, the six finalist team names for the new NHL franchise were Blue Ox, Freeze, Northern Lights, Voyageurs, White Bears, and Wild were announced on this date in 1997. The team was officially named the Wild, with the unveiling occurring at Aldrich Arena on January 22, 1998.

2001: Ben Clymer scored his second straight game-winning-goal as the Lightning came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 3-2.

2006: Kurtis Foster tied a Minnesota team record for defensemen by taking 7 shots for the Wild, going scoreless in a 5-3 loss in Ottawa.

2009: Owen Nolan scored two goals, including the game winner with 1:07 left in regulation to give the Minnesota Wild a 3-2 victory over the visiting New York Islanders. It was Nolan’s 75th career multi-goal game.
