This Day in MN Hockey History: Nov. 17

1935:  Chicago’s Mike Karakas recorded the second shutout of his rookie season, and Paul Thompson scored twice and added an assist as the Black Hawks won 3-0 against the visiting New York Rangers.

1955:  Former NHL center Dennis Maruk born in Toronto, Ont.  Maruk played in the NHL 1975-76 through 1988-89 with Oakland, Cleveland, the Minnesota North Stars and Washington.

1967:  Bemidji State University hockey Fieldhouse opened on this date.  It was later dedicated on February 10, 1968 & renamed to the John Glas Fieldhouse on October 1, 1975.

1972:  The Minnesota Fighting Saints franchise 1st ever recorded overtime goal was scored by Bob MacMillan against Philadelphia of the WHA.

1985:  Minnesota North Stars’ Neal Broten tied a franchise record with three straight goals in the second period in a 5-5 tie at Chicago.

1988:  Minnesota’s Dino Ciccarelli scored three goals (for his 13th career hat trick) and had an assist in the North Stars’ 7-6 win against Vancouver.

1990:  Toronto Maple Leafs traded Scott Pearson and their second round Entry Draft choices in the 1991 and 1992 Drafts to the Quebec Nordiques in exchange for Aaron Broten, Lucien Deblois and Michel Petit.

1999:  Bruce Gardiner scored a goal and had an assist in his first Lightning game, and rookie Ben Clymer scored his first NHL goal as Tampa Bay lost 5-4 at Atlanta.

2000:  Minnesota’s Peter Bartos scored his first career NHL goal as the Wild made played their first game ever against the Sabres, a 3-1 loss in Buffalo.

2006:  Jamie Langenbrunner scored twice and added an assist, Zach Parise had a goal and two assists and rookie Travis Zajac added three assists in the Devils 3-2 win against the visiting Ottawa Senators.

2010:  Antti Miettinen scored at 3:36 of overtime to give the Wild a 2-1 win over the visiting Anaheim Ducks.

2011:  Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom recorded his 24th career shutout, Devin Setoguchi scored the only goal of the game with 2:31 left in regulation and Nick Schultz became the first to play 700 games with the Wild in a 1-0 win over the visiting Avalanche.

2011:  David Backes scored two unassisted goals to lead the Blues to a 4-1 win over the visiting Florida Panthers.

2013:  University of Minnesota Gophers Womens Hockey 62 consecutive victories that started on February 18, 2012 ended with a 3-2 loss to visiting North Dakota at Ridder Arena.
