1935: Chicago’s rookie goalie Mike Karakas and Red Wings’ Norm Smith dueled to a 0-0 scoreless tie, in a game played at Detroit. It was the first career NHL shutout for Karakas and the third for Smith.
1937: Former North Stars center Murray Oliver born in Hamilton, Ont. Oliver played in the NHL 1957-58 through 1974-75.
1943: Chicago’s Cully Dahlstrom scored his first career hat trick, and added two assists in the Black Hawks’ 10-5 win against the New York Rangers.
1960: Former NHL center Aaron Broten born in Roseau, Minnesota. Broten played in the NHL 1980-81 through 1991-92 with the Colorado Rockies, New Jersey, the Minnesota North Stars, Quebec, Toronto and Winnipeg.
1962: Former North Stars defenseman Jari Gronstrand born in Tampere, Finland. Gronstrand played in the NHL 1986-87 through 1990-91.
1970: Minnesota North Stars faced the Vancouver Canucks for the first time in team history, and came away with a 3-3 tie, at the Met Center.
1973: Defenseman Barry Gibbs scored a goal and added four assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 6-3 win over Vancouver at the Met Center.
1979: Tim Young scored twice and added an assist to lead the North Stars to a 7-2 win over the Quebec Nordiques, in Minnesota.
1981: Al MacAdam scored a goal and added three assists in the Minnesota North Stars’ 5-5 tie against the visiting Quebec Nordiques.
1988: Dave Gagner scored his first NHL hat trick and added an assist to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 5-4 win at Toronto.
1992: Goaltender Jon Casey recorded his 11th career shutout as the Minnesota North Stars won 3-0 over the Blackhawks at the Met Center.
1998: Guy Hebert recorded his 18th career shutout and rookie defenseman Mike Crowley scored the only goal in the Mighty Ducks’ 1-0 win at Calgary.
1998: The University of Minnesota retired John Mayasich’s #8 in a pre-game ceremony vs. conference rival University of North Dakota, the only former Gopher to be so honored by the University.
2000: Pittsburgh Penguins signed free agent Jeff Norton, and acquired Dan Trebil from the NY Islanders in exchange for a future ninth-round draft pick.
2002: Manny Fernandez made 23 saves and was named the #1 Star of the Game, and Richard Park scored midway through the game to give the Wild a 1-1 tie against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.
2005: Jason Blake, the Islanders’ 9th shooter in the NHL’s longest shootout, scored the winning goal as New York won 3-2 over the Penguins at Pittsburgh.
2010: Cal Clutterbuck and Antti Miettinen scored power play goals in a three-goal first period as the Wild beat the Lightning 4-1 in Tampa Bay.
