This Day in MN Hockey History: Nov. 11

1964:  Former NHL left winger Randy Heath born in Duluth, MN.  Heath played in the NHL 1984-85 through 1985-86 with the New York Rangers.

1967:  Minnesota North Stars faced the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time in team history, and won 2-1, at the Met Center.  It was the North Stars’ first ever victory over one of the ‘original six’ NHL teams.

1972:  Goalie Gilles Gilbert got his first NHL shutout as the North Stars won 3-0 in their first game ever against the NY Islanders at the Met Center.

1972:  The Minnesota Fighting Saints 1st ever franchise shutout was recorded by Mike “Lefty” Curran against the Winnipeg Jets of the WHA.

1974:  St. Louis Blues traded Dave Gardner and Warren ‘Butch’ Williams to the California Seals in exchange for Craig Patrick and Stan Gilbertson.

1976:  North Stars traded Bill Goldsworthy, their all-time leader in games, goals, assists, and points to the NY Rangers in exchange for veterans Bill Fairbairn and Nick Beverley.

1981:  Minnesota North Stars set an NHL record when 11 different players scored goals in a 15-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.  Bobby Smith set a team record with 7 points (4 goals and 3 assists) and Dino Ciccarelli added a goal and four assists.  The win was the Stars largest margin of victory.

1981:  Reed Larson scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Red Wings to a 5-5 tie against the Black Hawks at Chicago.  Bob Murray had a goal and two assists for the Black Hawks.

1981:  Minnesota North Stars set franchise records for most power play goals in a game (5), most goals in a period (8 in the second period), and most goals in a game (15) in a 15-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

1982:  Gilles Meloche got his 18th career shutout as the North Stars won 2-0 over the NY Islanders in Minnesota.  Willi Plett led the scoring with two assists.

1984:  Tom McCarthy scored twice and added three assists in the Minnesota North Stars’ 7-6 win against the Maple Leafs, at Toronto.

1984:  Minnesota’s Dennis Maruk scored twice to give him 300 career NHL goals as the North Stars won 7-6 at Toronto.

1986:  Minnesota’s Dino Ciccarelli scored twice in his 15th game of the season, to set a modern NHL record for the fastest 20 goals from season’s start, in a 2-2 tie against the Capitals.  Joe Malone holds the all time record with 20 in 8 games in 1917-18.

1989:  Brian Bellows scored a goal and added two assists to lead the North Stars to a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames, in Minnesota.

1990:  Dave Christian played in his 800th career NHL game as the Bruins won 5-3 at Washington.

1990:  Phil Housley took 11 shots on goal for the Winnipeg Jets in a 3-3 tie at Chicago.

1994:  Minnesota Moose of the IHL won their first home game in franchise history, a 4-3 win over the visiting Chicago Wolves.

2001:  Steve Shields made 42 saves, and Matt Cullen had two assists for his 100th career assist in the Mighty Ducks 2-2 tie against the visiting Dallas Stars.  Ducks won despite being outshot 44-22.

2003:  Minnesota recorded their 100th all-time win and Jacques Lemaire became the 17th NHL coach to win 100 games with two different teams (New Jersey and Minnesota) when the Wild beat the visiting Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 1-0. Dwayne Roloson got the shutout.

2006:  Manny Fernandez became the first Minnesota Wild goalie to win 100 games, when Todd White scored the winning goal in the shootout, after getting two assists in regulation, in a 3-2 win against the Kings at Los Angeles.
