This Day in MN Hockey History: Jan. 28

1946: Former NHL defenseman Paul Shmyr born in Cudworth, Sask. Shmyr played in the NHL 1968-69 through 1981-82 with Chicago, Oakland, the Minnesota North Stars and Hartford.

1957: Former NHL right winger Mark Napier born in Toronto, Ont. Napier played in the NHL 1978-79 through 1988-89 with Montreal, the Minnesota North Stars, Edmonton and Buffalo.

1968: Minnesota North Stars faced the Detroit Red Wings for the first time in team history, and won 2-1 at the Met Center. Wayne Connelly led the scoring with a goal and an assist.

1973: Detroit’s Henry Boucha set an NHL record for the fastest goal scored from the start of a game, when he scored at the six-second mark in a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

1976: Pierre Jarry scored his first career hat trick, and Bill Goldsworthy had four assists in the Minnesota North Stars’ 9-3 win against the Kansas City Scouts, at the Met Center.

1979: Mike Fidler scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 3-1 win over the Sabres at Buffalo.

1988: Minnesota’s General Manager Lou Nanne resigned after over 20 years with the club as a player, coach and GM. As General Manager, the North Stars had a record of 331-336-134, winning Norris Division titles in 1981-82 and 1983-84.

1988: New Jersey’s Aaron Broten scored a goal and picked up three assists as the Devils won 6-3 over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.

1992: Minnesota’s Neal Broten played in his 761st game with the North Stars, to set a new team record (previously held by Curt Giles), and scored a shorthanded goal to help the team to a 4-3 win against the Whalers, at Hartford.

1994: Goaltender Jon Casey recorded his 13th career shutout (and his first with Boston), and Adam Oates scored a goal and added two assists as the Bruins won 3-0 over the Islanders at New York.

1995: New Jersey veteran Neal Broten became the third U.S. born player to appear in 1,000 career NHL games as the Devils recorded a 3-1 win over the visiting Florida Panthers.

1997: Dallas Stars claimed veteran Neal Broten off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings. Broten returned to his former team, the Stars, where he was the franchise all-time scoring leader.

2002: Craig Johnson scored twice, including the first shorthanded goal of his career, Mattias Norstrom scored his first goal in more than two years and Kelly Buchberger also added two goals in the Kings 6-4 win against the Avalanche at Colorado.

2003: Sergei Zholtok scored a goal and added an assist to give him 200 career NHL points as the Wild rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 tie against the Canucks at Vancouver.

2010: Josh Harding recorded his fourth career shutout and Martin Havlat scored with 4:49 remaining in regulation to lead the Wild to a 1-0 victory over the Avalanche, and the Wild’s second straight shutout in Colorado.
