This Day in MN Hockey History: Jan. 24

1969:  Minnesota North Stars obtained veteran defenseman Leo Boivin from Pittsburgh in trade for Duane Rupp.

1981:  Defenseman Reed Larson scored twice and added an assist, and Brent Peterson had a goal and two assists to lead the Red Wings to a 6-2 win over the Colorado Rockies, in Detroit.

1981:  Bobby Smith and Tim Young each scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 6-1 win over the visiting Edmonton Oilers.

1985:  Edmonton traded Terry Martin and Gord Sherven to the Minnesota North Stars in exchange for Mark Napier.

1986:  NHL defenseman Jack Hillen born in Minnetonka, Minnesota.  Hillen has played in the NHL since 2007-08 with the New York Islanders and Nashville.

1987:  Defenseman Mike Ramsey scored a goal and two assists as the Buffalo Sabres became just the second post-1967 expansion team to win 250 road games, with a 6-3 victory at Washington.

1988:  Neal Broten had three assists as the Minnesota North Stars won 5-3 over the Flyers at Philadelphia.

1988:  The North Stars got their first win in Philadelphia in almost 10 years, as Minnesota won 5-3 at the Spectrum.  In 16 games since April 9, 1978, the North Stars had been 0-11-5 at the Spectrum.

1991:  Defenseman Mike Ramsey scored a goal and added three assists, in a 5-4 Sabres’ win at Chicago.

2001:  Goalie Manny Fernandez recorded his 5th career shutout, and rookie Roman Simicek scored his first two career goals as Minnesota registered their first road shutout in team history, 5-0 against the Mighty Ducks in Anaheim.

2006:  Phoenix traded Martin Sonnenberg to the New York Rangers for Jeff Taffe.

2006:  Derek Boogaard became the first rookie in Minnesota Wild history to get 100 penalty minutes in his first NHL season when he picked up two minor penalties in a 3-2 win over the visiting Phoenix Coyotes.

2012:  Defenseman Alex Goligoski scored the only goal of the game and Kari Lehtonen recorded his 18th career shutout as the Stars beat the visiting Ducks 1-0.

2014:  Moorhead Youth Hockey Association celebrated the school & programs: “50 Years of Spud Hockey” – (1965-2015) capped off by a Moorhead vs. Roseau Boy’s Hockey game with the team donning throwback uniforms.
