This Day in MN Hockey History: Jan. 22

1934:  Former NHL assistant coach Warren Strelow born in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Strelow served as assistant coach in the league with Washington, New Jersey and San Jose, starting in 1983-84.

1939:  Boston’s rookie goaltender Frankie Brimsek recorded his 7th shutout of the season as the Bruins won 5-0 at Detroit.

1940:  Former NHL coach Andre Beaulieu born in Montreal, Que.  Beaulieu worked with the Minnesota North Stars and the New York Rangers, starting in 1975-76.

1953:  Former NHL right winger Tom Younghans born in St. Paul, MN.  Younghans played in the NHL 1976-77 through 1981-82 with the Minnesota North Stars and the New York Rangers.

1965:  Former NHL left winger Derrick Smith born in Scarborough, Ontario.  Smith played in the NHL 1984-85 through 1993-94 with Philadelphia, the Minnesota North Stars and Dallas.

1981:  Rookie Steve Christoff scored his second career hat trick and added an assist as the Minnesota North Stars lost 5-4 to the Flyers, at Philadelphia.

1982:  Glen Sonmor took over as the Minnesota North Stars head coach, replacing Murray Oliver (who had replaced Sonmor one week earlier).

1985:  Defenseman Reed Larson scored a goal and two assists, and Ron Duguay added three assists to lead Detroit to a 5-4 win over the Islanders at New York.

1986:  New Jersey Devils set a team record with 46 shots and Aaron Broten tied a team record with 9 shots in a 6-6 tie at Calgary.

1988:  Phil Housley scored his second career hat trick (tying a team record for most goals in a game by a defenseman) and added an assist, and Christian Ruuttu had two goals and two assists as the Sabres beat the Devils 7-3 at the Aud.

1988:  Minnesota North Stars traded Keith Acton to Edmonton in exchange for Moe Mantha.

1990:  Winnipeg Jets traded Daniel Berthiaume to the Minnesota North Stars in exchange for future considerations.

1995:  Flames’ defenseman Phil Housley scored his 250th NHL career goal as Calgary won 4-1, at Detroit.

1998:  The Minnesota Wild team name was made official on this date, with the unveiling occurring at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood, MN.   The new name was introduced to everyone with the song ‘Born to be wild’ by Steppenwolf playing over the arena’s speaker system, and a large hockey puck lowered to the ice with the team logo ‘Wild’ across the puck.

2000:  Vancouver’s Trent Klatt scored twice in the third period and added an assist to lead the Canucks to a 3-3 tie at Edmonton.

2002:  Minnesota Wild acquired left wing Hnat Domenichelli from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Andy Sutton.

2006:  Minnesota’s Derek Boogaard set a team record for most penalty minutes in a game by a rookie when he picked up 17 PIM in a 3-2 win at Chicago.

2008:  Matt Niskanen set a Dallas Stars team record for rookie defensemen by taking six shots in a 4-2 loss to visiting Columbus.
