1946: Bruins’ goalie Frank Brimsek recorded his first post-war shutout with 25 saves (his 27th career shutout) in a 3-0 Boston win over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.
1958: Former NHL left winger Jordy Douglas born in Winnipeg, Man. Douglas played in the NHL 1979-80 through 1984-85 with Hartford, the Minnesota North Stars and Winnipeg.
1970: A team record five North Star players compete in the 1970 NHL All-Star game held in St. Louis. (Bill Goldsworthy, Danny Grant, Claude Larose, Danny O’Shea and J.P. Parise)
1973: Mike Antonovich of Coleraine, MN notched the MN Fighting Saints franchises first hat-trick in team history against the Quebec Nordiques in the WHA.
1975: Former NHL right winger Christian Matte born in Hull, Que. Matte played in the NHL 1996-97 through 2000-01 with the Colorado Avalanche and the Minnesota Wild.
1977: Tim Young scored two goals and an assist, and Roland Eriksson had three assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 4-4 tie against the Atlanta Flames at the Met Center.
1984: Dennis Maruk and Steve Payne each scored twice in the Minnesota North Stars’ 8-5 win over the Red Wings at Detroit.
1984: Dave Christian scored two goals and added two assists as the Capitals won 5-3 over the visiting Chicago Black Hawks.
1987: Minnesota’s Don Beaupre recorded his third career shutout in the North Stars’ 5-0 win over the visiting Buffalo Sabres.
1998: Damian Rhodes set an Ottawa Senators team-record with his fourth shutout of the season, in a 0-0 tie against the Penguins, in Pittsburgh.
2003: Antti Laaksonen scored the winning goal at 2:53 of overtime as the Wild won 2-1 against the Mighty Ducks at Anaheim.
2006: The first-ever U.S. Pond Hockey Championships was ‘born’ on this date iced at Lake Calhoun for two days: January 20th-22nd. The first tournament drew nearly 120 teams of pond hockey players from across the nation to Minneapolis to play on 25 different rinks. The now ever-popular, U.S. Pond Hockey Championships, event is held each winter in late January on Lake Nokomis, Minneapolis MN.
2007: The first ever ‘Hockey Day Minnesota’ was started on this date. Hockey Day Minnesota is a day in Minnesota run in cooperation with the Minnesota Wild and Fox Sports North that features at least two Minnesota High School Boys Hockey games, a Minnesota Gopher men’s hockey game, and a Minnesota Wild NHL game. The inaugural outdoor games were played on Baudette Bay, with Lake of the Woods Bears defeated St. Paul Johnson Governors 5-3.
2009: Minnesota’s Marek Zidlicky set a team record for defensemen with his 9th power-play goal of the season, and added an assist to give him 200 career NHL points; the record came in a 5-2 loss at Los Angeles.
