1971: Goaltender Cesare Maniago recorded his 14th career shutout in the Minnesota North Stars’ 2-0 win over the Red Wings at Detroit. Tom Williams scored a goal and an assist, and Murray Oliver had two assists.
1971: Former NHL center Derek Plante born in Duluth, Minnesota. Plante played in the NHL 1993-94 through 2000-01 with Buffalo, Dallas, Chicago and Philadelphia.
1976: Pierre Jarry scored a goal and added two assists as the Minnesota North Stars were credited with the 150th home victory in franchise history, 7-3 over the Washington Capitals.
1980: Hartford traded Al Hangsleben to Washington, in exchange for Tom Rowe.
1981: Bobby Smith scored his second career hat trick and added an assist to lead the North Stars to a 7-1 win against the Quebec Nordiques, in Minnesota.
1981: NHL right wing Craig Weller born in Calgary, Alta. Weller has played in the NHL since 2007-08 with Phoenix and the Minnesota Wild.
1982: North Stars set a franchise record for fastest three goals when Tim Young, Steve Payne and Dino Ciccarelli combined to score in a span of :50 during the first minute of the third period in a 7-5 win over the visiting Black Hawks.
1987: Minnesota North Stars retired Bill Masterton’s #19 sweater in a pregame ceremony before Brian Bellows scored twice to lead the North Stars to a 3-2 win over Chicago.
1991: MN North Stars began a team-record 13 game home undefeated streak (11-0-2) with a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals.
1999: Florida Panthers acquired Pavel Bure, Bret Hedican, Brad Ference and a conditional draft pick from the Vancouver Canucks (Robert Fried) in exchange for Dave Gagner, Ed Jovanovski, Mike Brown, goaltender Kevin Weekes and a 1st round pick (Nathan Smith).
2001: Minnesota’s Sean O’Donnell scored at 3:53 of overtime to lead the Wild to a 3-2 win against the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets.
2004: Doug Weight scored a power-play goal with 1:37 remaining in regulation to lead the Blues to a 2-2 tie with the visiting Wild. Minnesota extended its OT unbeaten streak to 24 games.
2004: Filip Kuba became the first defenseman to score 100 points as a member of the Minnesota Wild; he reached the milestone with an assist in a 2-2 tie at St. Louis.
2009: The third annual ‘Hockey Day Minnesota’ was held on this date. Hockey Day Minnesota is a day in Minnesota run in cooperation with the Minnesota Wild and Fox Sports North that features at least two Minnesota High School Boys Hockey games, a Minnesota Gopher men’s hockey game, and a Minnesota Wild NHL game. The outdoor games were held at historic Phalen Park in St. Paul, MN. St. Paul Johnson defeated the Rockets from Rochester John Marshall 4-0. This years Hockey Day also featured the first Girls’ outdoor game to Hockey Day Minnesota, with Stillwater defeating Minnetonka Girls; 2-1 at snowy Phalen Park.
2011: Dallas’ Jamie Langenbrunner celebrated his 1,000th career NHL game by scoring the winning goal and Kari Lehtonen made a penalty shot save on Jack Johnson with 52.4 seconds left in regulation as the Stars beat the visiting L.A. Kings 2-1.
2014: The 2nd annual Hockey City Classic was played on this date held outdoors at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus which was the largest attended hockey game in Minnesota hockey history with 45,021 spectators to witness te University of Minnesota Mens team defeat the visiting University of Ohio State 1-0 in a B1G match-up.
