1906: At 8:15 P.M. the Historic St. Paul Athletic Club Hockey Squad, led by Frank ‘Moose’ Goheen, played what was billed as the ‘1st BIG League Hockey Game Ever Played in the Twin Cities’ when the AC’s from St. Paul, skated against the famous Portage Lake team of Houghton, Michigan at the St. Paul Hippodrome. The Hippodrome was located within the Minnesota State Fair Grounds (The location of the State Fair Coliseum today).
1951: Former NHL defenseman Bill Butters born in St. Paul, Minnesota. Butters played in the NHL 1977-78 through 1978-79 with the Minnesota North Stars.
1968: Wayne Connelly scored the first hat trick in North Stars history (and first career hat trick) and Bill Masterton tied a team record with three assists in a 6-4 win over Philadelphia.
1970: Danny Grant scored his third career hat trick and the North Stars set a team record with 54 penalty minutes in a 6-4 loss to Los Angeles.
1976: Cesare Maniago recorded his 28th career shutout in the North Stars’ 2-0 win over the Blues at the Met Center. Rookie Tim Young scored both goals and Pierre Jarry and Dean Talafous assisted on both goals.
1981: Detroit Red Wings named Reed Larson as their new team captain.
1983: Aaron Broten had a goal and two assists to lead the Devils to a 6-2 win against the Quebec Nordiques, in New Jersey.
1983: NHL defenseman Tom Gilbert born in Minneapolis, MN. Gilbert has played in the NHL since 2006-07 with Edmonton and the Minnesota Wild.
1985: MN North Stars signed Chris Pryor as a free agent.
1987: Defenseman Mike Ramsey scored a goal and added three assists to reach his 200th career NHL point, as the Sabres won 8-5 at Los Angeles.
1993: Defenseman Phil Housley, in his 800th NHL game, scored a goal and two assists to lead the Jets to their fifth straight home victory, a 3-2 win against the Penguins in Winnipeg.
2001: Manny Fernandez recorded his 4th career shutout as the Wild extended their NHL expansion team-record unbeaten streak to nine straight games (6-0-3) with their shutout over the visiting Washington Capitals, 3-0.
2002: Sergei Zholtok set a Wild team record for fastest two goals when he scored twice in a span of 2:44 during the second period of a 2-2 tie at Nashville.
2003: Minnesota outshot Phoenix 43-30 (and set a team record for most shots in a home game) as Cliff Ronning and Andrei Zyuzin scored power-play goals in a 2-1 win over the visiting Coyotes.
2004: Toronto Maple Leafs claimed forward Craig Johnson off waivers from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
2004: Trent Klatt scored two power-play goals in the Kings 2-2 tie with the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets.
2008: Minnesota’s Eric Belanger tied the game at 19:11 of the third period, and Marian Gaborik scored the winning shootout goal along with a goal and two assists in regulation as the Wild won 6-5 over the Red Wings at Detroit.
2009: Philadelphia picked up the 1,600th win in team history when Jeff Carter scored twice in the third period and defenseman Andrew Alberts ended a 163-game goal scoring drought with his first goal as a Flyer in a 4-1 win over the visiting Maple Leafs.
2009: New Jersey’s Zach Parise became part of the seventh father/son pair in NHL history who each scored 100 or more NHL goals, when he connected for the 100th of his career in a 5-1 win in Los Angeles. Parise’s father J.P. had 238 goals in 14 seasons.
2012: Minnesota native Matt Cullen celebrated his 1,000th career NHL game with a regulation goal and the deciding goal in the shootout, a 5-4 win over the visiting San Jose Sharks. Cullen joins only 6 other players from the ‘State of Hockey’ that reached 1,000 career NHL games. On top of the list is St. Paul’s Phil Housley, who spent 22 seasons in the league, and retired 5 short of 1500 games.
