This Day in MN Hockey History: Dec 1

1916: Over 30 Women try-out for the first Gopher Women’s Hockey team.

1922: The Saint Paul Athletic Club redesigns it’s jerseys and goes on to challenge for the National Championship.

1935:  Chicago’s goaltender Mike Karakas recorded the third shutout of his rookie season as the Black Hawks won 1-0 over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.

1938:  Boston’s rookie goalie Frankie Brimsek played his first NHL game.  He lost 2-0 to the Canadiens (with rookie Claude Bourque getting his first career shutout), but went on to record 6 shutouts in his next 7 games, to earn the nickname ‘Mr. Zero’.

1946:  Former NHL defenseman Jim McKenny born in Ottawa, Ont.  McKenny played in the NHL 1965-66 through 1978-79 with Toronto and the Minnesota North Stars.

1946: The Warroad Lakers open their first season on an outdoor rink in the center of the town.

1971:  Bill Goldsworthy scored his 5th career hat trick to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 4-1 win over the California Golden Seals, at the Met Center.

1971:  Former NHL defenseman Chris McAlpine born in Roseville, MN.  McAlpine played in the NHL 1994-95 through 2002-03 with New Jersey, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles.

1976:  Rick MacLeish had two assists to lead the Flyers to a 2-2 tie with the North Stars at Minnesota.  Dwight Bialowas had two assists for Minnesota.

1979:  Reed Larson scored twice and added an assist, and Dan Labraaten had a goal and two assists to lead the Red Wings to a 6-3 win over the Boston Bruins, in Detroit.

1980:  Tim Young scored a goal and added two assists as the Minnesota North Stars recorded the 350th win in franchise history, 5-3 over the Rangers at New York.

1982:  Steve Payne scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 4-1 win over the Red Wings at Detroit.

1983:  Willi Plett scored a goal and added two assists as the Minnesota North Stars won 6-4 over the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

1983:  Dave Christian scored two goals and added two assists to lead the Capitals to an 8-4 win against the visiting New Jersey Devils.

1987:  Brian Bellows scored twice, including the winner at 1:20 of overtime to lead the North Stars to a 3-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs, in Minnesota.

1992:  Tony Granato and Corey Millen each scored twice and had two assists, and Kelly Hrudey picked up his 200th NHL victory, in the Kings’ 6-3 win over the Blackhawks at a neutral site game played in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

1993:  R. David Spreng and Paul Jaas put together a group of investors to form Cities Hockey Inc. as part of the new Roller Hockey International team in MN, the Arctic Blast.

1995:  Calgary’s Phil Housley became the 7th defenseman in NHL history to score 900 career points, when his goal helped the Flames to an 8-2 win at Edmonton.

2001:  Craig Johnson scored twice to match his career high, Jaroslav Modry had a career-high three assists and rookie defenseman Andreas Lilja picked up an assist for his first point in 3 NHL games as the Kings won 4-2 against the visiting Nashville Predators.

2005:  Predators’ Jarred Smithson scored his first career goal as the Predators outshot the Wild 46-20 for a 2-1 victory at Nashville. Dwayne Roloson made 44 saves for Minnesota.

2008:  Brent Burns became the second defenseman to score 100 points as a member of the Minnesota Wild; he reached the milestone with a goal and an assist in a 6-5 loss vs Colorado.
